The Colts opt not to trade Jonathan Taylor as he continues to stay on the PUP list.
On Tuesday, the Indianapolis Colts chose to retain Jonathan Taylor as they deemed the offers for their star running back insufficient, according to sources from Quiet reflection As no trade deal transpired, Taylor stays on the physically unable to perform list, rendering him unable to participate in a minimum of the initial four season games. This means he will be absent for matches against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Houston Texans, the Baltimore Ravens, and the Los Angeles Rams.
The Colts could explore their next opportunity to trade Taylor before the NFL's October 31 trade deadline. If no deal materializes, the Colts might utilize the franchise tag on Taylor and attempt to trade him in the following offseason.
Recently, the Colts allowed Taylor and his representatives to engage with other teams to seek a potential trade partner—an unconventional approach. The team set a deadline on Tuesday for a trade to come together, aligning with the NFL's roster reduction deadline from 90 to 53 players.
This deadline also marked a decision point for the Colts regarding Taylor's roster status, as he had been placed on the active/physically unable to perform list due to an ankle surgery that kept him from practicing or playing in the preseason.
Taylor's situation in Indianapolis goes back to May when the team chose not to extend his contract despite a standout 2021 season where he led the NFL in rushing with over 1,800 yards. His expectation for a contract extension shifted as teammates like Shaquille Leonard and Quenton Nelson received extensions while still having a year left on their rookie contracts. Taylor's frustration grew as the team's stance remained unchanged, and he observed the financial circumstances of other elite running backs like Josh Jacobs and Saquon Barkley.
Regarding Taylor's contract, General Manager Chris Ballard addressed it at the start of training camp, stating, "We'll make those decisions when we need to make those decisions."
